Whether you’re doing a 3-pitch 5.5 or a 31-pitch, grade VI 5.13, efficiency in your multi-pitch climbing systems is important! In this full day with Heidi and Hans you will develop techniques & strategies that incorporate a mindset where safety is integrated into your ability to move efficiently in the mountains. Plan your next big adventure with the skills and confidence!

  • Heidi & Hans will explain the process of multi-pitch climbing, including the preliminary planning and gear selection phase. They will demonstrate anchoring & descent techniques that prioritize a perfect balance of safety and speed. Throughout the day you’ll get to practice these different systems, build on efficient transitions, and consider how to apply these methods as you embark on your next multi-pitch rock adventure!

PREPARATIONS FOR MULTI PITCH CLIMBING

Technical Experience

This clinic is valuable to those new to multi-pitch climbing AND those who have previously practiced some of these skills. To make the most of our time together please consider having traditional lead climbing experience. If you would like more trad climbing experience prior to this program please look into our One-day Trad Intensive.

Fitness

General climbing fitness is recommended. Multi-pitch climbing is a physical pursuit that can require long days of approaching, climbing, and descending many vertical feet! General fitness allows you to move through terrain, focusing on building skills and less on physical fatigue.

Meet Your INstructors

  • Heidi Wirtz is a climber, guide, and yogin. She holds a deep love of connecting with nature, sharing her passions, and inspiring others to follow their dreams. She has been climbing for over thirty years, letting her passion for adventure and exploration lead her to exotic and remote places around the world. Heidi has pioneered new routes up unclimbed big walls and mountains and pushed the limits of female exploration.

Heidi is the founder and owner of an adventure retreat business called Earth Play Retreats (EPR), which combines adventure sports, a connection to nature, and yoga. Through her guiding, instruction, and Earth Play Retreats, she is dedicated to offering her clients a transformational experience that will carry over into their everyday lives.

Heidi has been guiding in the outdoors for over 28 years and is a certified AMGA Rock Guide, Apprentice Ski Guide, and Apprentice Alpine Guide, making her an Apprentice Mountain Guide. Heidi is also an SPI Program Provider. Heidi is working towards her full IFMGA certification.

  • Hans Florine knows speed. He is a speed climber, professional speaker, author, and thought leader in speed and climbing efficiency. Hans has repeatedly set and broken one of the most coveted speed records in the world: The Nose of El Capitan, a 2,900-foot monolith in Yosemite Valley. In 2012, Hans & climbing partner Alex Honnold, set the record at 2 hours and 23 minutes, lowering the previous record by a full 13 minutes. He also holds numerous speed records in Yosemite National Park and all over the globe.

Although ’Speed’ is ubiquitous with Hans’s name, he is careful to point out that without safety first he would not have had 40 years of climbing in 17 countries, and over 200 bigwall ascents in Yosemite, to his credit.

Hans is an athlete/ambassador for: Coros, Physivantage, Blue Water Ropes, La Sportiva, BU Sunscreen, Petzl, and Touchstone Climbing Inc. He is an ambassador for The Access Fund, an active member of The American Alpine Club, and a supporting member of the Yosemite Fund, Leave No Trace, and South Yuba River Citizens League.
